Neonatal Ocular Prophylaxis: Is it Necessary or Effective?


According to medical studies, no.  Below you will find studies which prove that the eye ointment routinely applied to newborns does not significantly alter eye infections as opposed to no ointment of any kind.  Also, there is evidence that the bacteria which cause these infections are not passed to the infant in the birth canal, but after birth.  Also, it has been found that a significant number of infants develop an infection even though they HAVE received the ointment. Eye Prophylaxis Study Group.  Department of Biostatistics, University of Washington, Seattle 98195.  OBJECTIVE. To compare the efficacy of commonly used forms of eye prophylaxis for newborns with no prophylaxis in the prevention of nongonococcal conjunctivitis. The results suggest that parental choice of a prophylaxis agent including no prophylaxis is reasonable for women receiving prenatal care and who are screened for sexually transmitted diseases during pregnancy.

Chen JY.    Prophylaxis of ophthalmia neonatorum: comparison of silver nitrate, tetracycline, erythromycin and no prophylaxis.  Pediatr Infect Dis J 1992 Dec;11(12):1026-30.

The incidence rates of neonatal chlamydial conjunctivitis in the tetracycline, erythromycin, silver nitrate, no prophylaxis and erythromycin twice groups were 1.3, 1.5, 1.7, 1.6 and 1.4%, respectively. We conclude that neonatal ocular prophylaxis with erythromycin (one or two doses) or tetracycline or silver nitrate does not significantly reduce the incidence of neonatal chlamydial conjunctivitis compared with that in those given no prophylaxis.


Krohn MA, Hillier SL, Bell TA, Kronmal RA, Grayston JT.  The bacterial etiology of conjunctivitis in early infancy.  5: Am J Epidemiol 1993 Sep 1;138(5):326-32.

The findings concerning the species of bacteria most often associated with conjunctivitis, as well as the finding that method of delivery is unimportant, suggest that bacteria were transmitted to the infants' eyes after birth and not from the birth canal.

The conclusion was that a substantial percentage of infants exposed to Chlamydia develop chlamydial conjunctivitis despite receiving erythromycin ocular prophylaxis.

I feel inclined to ask, if the infants are contracting the bacteria after birth and not in the birth canal, where is it coming from?  In the hospital, bacteria is rampant, and even the chemical sterilizing agents used to clean hospitals have been shown to be ineffective in totally wiping out bacteria.  It is hard for me to believe that it was introduced to the infants by the mothers after birth;  the baby makes it through the birth canal, with the mother's bodily fluids smeared all over it, and still comes out without an infection, only to be introduced to it from normal handling by the mother?  I don't think so.  I can only conclude it was introduced by the handling of hospital personnel.

Another good reason for home birth, where your baby is already immune to the germs in the environment it is born into.

Calcium



Calcium is the most abundant mineral in the body.  99% of the body's calcium is stored in the bones and teeth, with 1% utilized for other bodily functions.  It accounts for 1.5 to 2% of our total body weight.  Calcium is very important because without it, your body would not function in any way.  Without calcium, your bones would break, muscles would not contract, heart would not beat, blood would not clot, food would not digest, blood pH would become dangerously acidic, your body would become puffy from water retention, you would have constant headaches, you would be in constant pain, unable to sleep, and would suffer from many nervous and mental illnesses.  In short, we should pay very close attention to whether our bodies are getting enough calcium.

Calcium must be taken in its Ionic form in order to be directly absorbed.  Otherwise, it must be broken down through digestion, which is very inefficient. Calcium is usually only 20 to 30 percent absorbed (1).  Some common, cheap brands are only about 5% absorbable.  This means that you must take more than you need to make sure you are getting enough.  Calcium and phosphorus must be present at least equally in the diet in order to give firmness to the bones; however, since the typical American diet is high in phosporus and low in calcium, supplementation with phosphorus is not necessary and is not advised.  Calcium must, however, be taken with magnesium in the proper ratio, 2:1.  In other words, if you take 1000 mg of calcium it must be accompanied by 500 mg of magnesium.  If it is not, there will be an excess buildup of calcium in the muscles, heart, and kidneys.

Many studies suggest that calcium/magnesium supplementation can help lower blood pressure in the general population (2).  Individuals with impaired calcium metabolism were shown to have lower blood pressure when their diets were supplemented with calcium (3).  Pregnancy induced hypertension was also lowered through ingestion of oral calcium (4).
The primary source of calcium is dairy products.  Plant foods rich in calcium include tofu, kale, spinach, turnip greens, collard greens, mustard greens and almonds.  Calcium absorption from kale is superior to that from milk (5).

Calcium is usually well tolerated in dosages of 2,000 milligrams or less per day.  A minimum of 2,000mg per day is recommended for every man, woman and child.  Calcium is lost in significant quantities in the urine when caffeine, phosphates, alcohol, protein, sodium, and sugar are ingested.  For every gram of protein ingested, 10 milligrams of calcium are lost in the urine, so people who eat a lot of protein should increase their calcium supplementation.  Also, see  Why Soda Pop Drains You Dry  for more information on why calcium supplementation is necessary.  For every soda consumed, 20mg of calcium is withdrawn from the bones to combat the acid in the soda.

How does calcium heal?  Basically, by neutralizing the acidic nature of our blood, tissues and organs.  When too acidic, our DNA cannot replicate to form new tissue to heal us.   Acid drives out oxygen, so when you are too acidic you are literally starving your cells for oxygen, which gives cancer room to develop, because it thrives in an environment of high acid.  By simply raising your pH level, you can wipe virtually any degenerative disease.  If your doctor has told you that you are incurable or terminal, don't believe him.  Don't write yourself off yet.  What do you have to lose?  

You also need about 5000 IU of Vitamin D each day in order to absorb the most calcium possible, and two hours of direct sunlight on your face daily to make all your glands work properly, as well as convert the cholesterol in your skin to Vitamin D naturally.

Journaling Circle


Journaling is more than just writing down what happened to you during the day. It has many positive aspects which can be helpful to you in mental, emotional and spiritual ways.



Journaling is an effective means of stress reduction. By writing about what troubles or frustrates you, this makes it possible for you to release much of those frustrations so you carry less of it with you. Journaling actually helps you to see and understand more clearly what you want and what is important to you. It helps you focus.

Routine journaling means making time for you, and this is something people do not do enough of. Setting aside time each day when you give yourself permission to openly examine your thoughts and feelings, and to value what you think and believe is in and of itself therapeutic.


Journaling can enhance intuition and creativity. It awakens your inner voice and helps you learn to trust yourself. It helps you improve your ability to gain insight and sensitivity to things going on both outside and inside yourself. It shifts your perspective so you can understand things differently. It reveals the great potential that 

is within you, and helps you find more meaning in life.

Journaling can also help you to access the spiritual part of yourself. When you journal, you create a special devotional space, a place that is sacred and holy for you. You can ask your questions, and receive your answers, from whatever source you choose. 


The American Medical Association published a trial of a "get it off your chest" writing exercise.  Seventy one patients with asthma or rheumatoid arthritis were randomized to write about the most stressful experience they had ever had for twenty minutes over a few days, as compared with a control group.  Findings from this study showed a significant improvement in standard measures of disease severity four months later. "Although it may be difficult to believe that a brief writing exercise can meaningfully affect health, this study replicates in a chronically ill sample what a burgeoning literature indicates in healthy individuals."

Choose your writing tools carefully. A piece of notebook paper and a pencil may be an acceptable way to start, or is it? You are creating for yourself a special, private space. What do you want it to feel like? Your journaling space can be like your own little secret garden, or your own private library where every volume is about you! Choose beautiful colored paper, or a special bound journal book, perhaps decorated with a theme that is meaningful to you. Above all, it should feel special to you, so that when you open the pages, it's like taking you to another world.

There are several techniques. The first is to simply start writing. Don't think about what you are "supposed" to write, or any particular topic. Just let the words start flowing out onto the page, and see what is there.  What thoughts, feelings, ideas are on the tip of your tongue, ready to be heard? Give yourself permission to think about and express yourself on topics that might be tender subjects, that in the "real" world you probably wouldn't talk to anyone about or even allow yourself to consider very closely. Are there some things that would be impolite or difficult to talk about to another person? Are there thoughts you have which might make others uncomfortable, so you don't even really allow them to come to the surface so you can really examine them? This is your safe space, where anything is allowed.
What are you hungry for?  What craving is there within your soul that needs to be satisfied? Think about it as you begin to write in your journal for the first time.

As you write in your journal, realize this: what you think and want for your life is important. You are important, you are worthy, you are acceptable, and you are incredibly powerful. Allow yourself to feel what you feel, fully and openly, if only in this private space. Then later on, perhaps you will find the ability to live it in your real life. Allow the solitude of your time spent in this private space to feed you, to nourish you, to strengthen you.

Inositol: A Necessary Nutrient



Inositol is recognized as part of the B-Complex vitamins.  It works closely with Choline as one of the primary components of the cell membrane.  The human body contains more inositol than any other vitamin except Niacin (1).  It is found in large quantities in the spinal cord nerves, the brain, and the cerebral spinal fluid.  It is also needed for growth and survival of cells in bone marrow, eye membranes, and the intestines.  It also encourages hair growth and can help prevent baldness.

Like Choline, Inositol helps to move fat out of the liver, and helps prevent serious liver disorders, as well as disorder involving high cholesterol.  Serotonin and acetylcholine, two neurotransmitters, both depend upon Inositol, and it supplementation therefore can assist in the reduction of depression and panic attacks (2).  Loss of Inositol from nerve cells is the primary reason for Diabetic neuropathy, so Inositol supplementation can assist in improving this condition.  Phytic acid, the plant source of Inositol, has been shown to have anticancer properties, which may be one reason why a high-fiber diet protects against many cancers (3).

Inositol also has a prominent calming effect on the central nervous system, so it is sometimes helpful to those with insomnia.  Studies on brain waves have shown that it has an effect similar to that of Librium or Valium.  It can gradually lower blood pressure, and can be helpful in cases of schizophrenia, hypoglycemia, and those with high serum copper and low serum zinc levels.

Because it stimulates muscles of the alimentary canal, Inositol is helpful in cases of constipation.  It can also induce labor contractions in pregnant women.
Most sources state that Inositol is not essential in the human diet.   If it is a fundamental ingredient of cell membranes and is necessary for proper nerve, brain, and muscle function, how can it NOT be essential?  Cell function is impaired when inositol is not present.  Perhaps it is seen as not necessary in the diet because it can be synthesized by the intestinal flora.  The action of the intestinal bacteria liberates inositol from phytic acid, which is found in citrus fruits, whole grains, nuts, seeds and legumes.   The same kind of statement is made in reference to the amino acids.  The ones which the body manufactures are considered "non-essential" amino acids.  But I believe this is incorrect terminology.  All the amino acids ARE essential to bodily functions, it's just that some are made by the body, so we don't have to concentrate on how much we eat.  That doesn't mean they aren't essential to the body's functioning, and so the same is true of inositol.

However, just because the body can manufacture a certain nutrient doesn't mean that it necessarily provides all that is needed in every circumstance.  In certain disease states, certain nutrients may be required in greater quantities than the body can produce, which is why it is also found in foods.  My belief is, if it's found in food, then we need to consume it, otherwise why would it be there?

Daily dosages include:

As a general rule, if you have none of the specific problems listed in this article, it is generally thought that the dosage of Inositol should be the same as that of Choline daily.

For liver support - 100 to 500 milligrams daily
For depression or panic attacks - 12 grams
For diabetes, 1,000 to 2,000 milligrams (4)
For blood pressure - one gram in the morning and one gram at night (5).

5-HTP (Hydroxytryptophan) And it's Uses as a Nutritional Supplement


About a year ago, I started having trouble getting to sleep at night.  I was already having trouble staying asleep during the night, but chalked that up to the chronic pain I had been experiencing for some time.  Finally it got to the point where I was unable to get to sleep at all. I'd be awake one night and then the next night would fall asleep out of exhaustion, but not sleep well, then the next night, back to being unable to sleep at all.  I had tried a Melatonin supplement, which helped for about three or four months, but eventually stopped working.

A friend recommended that I try 5-HTP.  I didn't really know anything about the supplement, but just tried it on her recommendation alone.  I was also having chronic pain at that time caused by degenerative disc disease.  I was having a lot of pain in my neck, shoulder and left arm.  I usually managed my pain with trips to the chiropractor, using the ice pack, and taking Lortab when absolutely necessary. But the Lortabs weren't even working anymore, and chiropractic was only minimally helpful. I was facing a life of a lot of pain.

I went to the health food store and bought he cheapest bottle of 5-HTP I could find, about $17.99.  They were 50mg tablets.  I had done some reading and the literature suggested taking a dose of 100 milligrams with each meal and at bedtime.  I took my first dose of 100 mg at noon.

I am used to ignoring my pain and trying to carry on with life because that was all I could do most of the time, so I don't really know when this happened, but about 4:30 pm I noticed that I no longer had any pain in my neck, shoulder or arm.  This area had been throbbing for days despite two trips to the chiropractor and taking Lortabs. Now, I was virtually pain-free!  I had been told that it might take up to four weeks for me to see any improvement in my sleep problems, but that night, after taking the lunch, dinner and bedtime doses, I drifted off to sleep with no problem and only woke up once during the night.  Fantastic!

So how does this work?

5-HTP is produced by the body from the amino acid Tryptophan.  It is then used to make Serotonin, an important neurotransmitter. Seratonin is 5-HT. Low levels of Seratonin can produce changes in sleep, mood, anxiety, aggression, appetite, temperature, sexual behavior and pain sensation.

Tryptophan is found to be naturally occurring in red meats, poultry, seafood such as tuna, salmon, halibut, and shrimp, cottage cheese, Swiss cheese, peanuts, cashews and avocados.  However, eating more of these foods in your diet does not seem to raise the amounts of 5-HTP in the brain.  Probably because the person has other nutritional deficiencies which keep the body from converting Tryptophan to 5-HTP.

Studies on rats and monkeys showed that increasing the amount of Vitamin B6 consumed increased the amount of 5-HTP in the brain.  Now, taking the 5-HTP by itself will still increase 5-HTP levels, but increasing Vitamin B6 simply increases the amount of 5-HTP that is converted.  It increased levels of 5-HTP in the brain by up to 60% when accompanied by Vitamin B6.


The main source for 5-HTP is the African plant Griffonia simplicfolia.

5-HTP administration causes a significant increase in the hormone Leptin.  Leptin plays an important role in the regulation of appetite and other physicological processes.  5-HTP administration results in significant increases in insulin, corticosterone and prolactin levels, and all of these hormones can increase leptin levels. 5-HTP can increase leptin levels. and can help prevent dieting-associated declines in serotonin, thus enhancing weight loss.

I also have diabetes so I am not sure yet what effect this increased insulin level will have on the diabetes, will have to let you know about that later. However, for now, I am sold on this supplement.

PABA: The Vitamin Enabler


Para-aminobenzoic acid, also known as PABA, occurs simultaneously with folic acid.  PABA stimulates the intestinal bacteria, enabling them to produce folic acid, and eventually pantothenic acid (1).

I hope that by the time many of you have gotten to this article, you have also read some of my other articles about the other vitamins necessary for good health.  If you have, there is one fact that I hope has rung through loud and clear......every disease starts in the intestinal tract.  It is in the intestinal tract that certain substances in foods are turned into the vitamins we need, and it is in the intestinal tract that they are absorbed.  If conditions are not right, certain vitamins cannot be made.  Your eating and drinking habits can cause the walls of the intestine to be unhealthy so that they don't let vitamins and minerals through into the bloodstream, thereby starving your body of vital nutrients needed for proper functioning.  Your present and future health both depend upon creating a healthy intestinal tract.  All the nutrients work together.  PABA is just one of the nutrients that must be available in order for the other vitamins to do their job.

Some people believe that PABA is not necessary to human health.  However, it occurs naturally in our food supply, in liver, yeast, wheat germ, and molasses.  My personal belief is that if it occurs naturally in the food supply, it is there because we need it.

PABA plays an important role in determining skin health, hair pigmentation, and health of the intestines.  It also acts as a sunscreen and is incorporated into some sunscreen ointments.


A safe, average daily dose is 30 mg per day, but higher doses are used for therapeutic reasons.  Extremely high doses are not recommended.  Deficiency symptoms include fatigue, irritability, depression, nervousness, headache, constipation, and other digestive disorders (1).

Vitamin P Flavonoids: From Cancer to The Common Cold


Flavonoids are a group of plant pigments which determine the color of many fruits and vegetables.  Over 4,000 flavonoids have been detected and classified according to chemical structure.  One common source for them is the white covering of the segments in citrus fruits.  The whole segments of the fruit contain ten times more bioflavonoid activity than the strained juice (1).

The most beneficial group of plant flavonoids is the proanthocyanidins.  These are commercially available as grape seed extract and extract of the maritime pine bark, although the grape seed has a more potent effect.  They are anti-oxidants, but are much more powerful than Vitamin C or E.  The value of these compounds is their ability to "increase intracellular vitamin C levels, decrease capillary permeability and fragility, scavenge oxidants and free radicals, and inhibit destruction of collagen...PCO extracts also prevent the release and synthesis of compounds that promote inflammation and allergies" (2).  These compounds are extremely important in the prevention and treatment of cancer, heart disease, and arthritis, as well as the aging process, and virtually every chronic degenerative disease that exists. 

Quercetin is the most potent and active of the flavonoids in medical studies.  It is the base for the citrus flavonoids, including rutin, quercitrin, and hesperidin.  These other flavonoids have Quercetin in combination with sugar molecules.  Quercetin has a significant anti-inflammatory effect.  It is also an inhibitor of the enzyme aldose reductase, the enzyme responsible for the conversion of blood sugar to sorbitol, a compound strongly implicated in the development of diabetic complications (3).  Quercetin is a phytoestrogen, which means that it has an anti-estrogenic effect which could lead to a reduced risk of some kinds of cancer (4).  It has been found to inhibit breast cancer cells in a test tube (5).  Quercetin has the greatest anti-viral activity against normal viral infections such as the common cold, as well as herpes virus type I, para-influenzae 3, polio virus type I, and respiratory syncytial virus.  Quercetin is also the most effective of all the flavonoids at inhibiting tumor growth (6). 

Most of the research on citrus bioflavonoids have used the flavonoid Rutin. Specifically, a combination of rutinosides called hydroxyethylrutosides (HER) has been used with impressive results.  It has been used in the treatment of varicose veins, hemorrhoids, diabetic vascular disease, and diabetic retinopathy.  One of the chief benefits of bioflavonoids is that they increase the blood flow through the small blood vessels.  Mixed preparations of bioflavonoids are the most widely used and the cheapest, but are also the least active.  Preparations containing pure rutin and hesperidin, or HER are the best.
   

Green Tea Polyphenols are of great use in the treatment of cancer.  Both green tea and black come from the same plant, but while green tea leaves are lightly steamed to produce the tea, black tea leaves are actually allowed to oxidize first.  Black tea can actually make some cancers worse, while green tea, made from the same plant, can protect against many types of cancers.  It does this by blocking the formation of certain types of cancer-causing compounds, suppressing the activation of carcinogens, and detoxifying these cancer-causing agents.  It also inhibits tumor growth. 

In my opinion, bioflavonoids of all kinds need to be part of everyone's diet, through direct eating of citrus and other fruits, as well as through supplementation.  With cancer on the rise, and so many carcinogenic chemicals in our environment and our diets, we cannot afford not to supplement our diets with these wonderful gifts from nature.

Toxicity information:  Proanthocyanidins - none, no toxic effects reported, even at high dosages.  Quercetin - no toxic effects found in dosages even up to 2000 milligrams per kilogram of body weight for as long as two years.  Citrus bioflavonoids - no toxic side effects of any kind reported.  Green tea polyphenols - no significant side effects.  Green tea does contain caffeine, and may produce a stimulant effect in some; however, it does not appear to produce these symptoms in many people who are normally sensitive to caffeine.  All these bioflavonoid compounds are considered safe during pregnancy.
